Maryland public schools teach kids about gayness and that is controversial.
I'm torn. It's only fair that more public resources go to gay stuff, because a lot already goes to anti-gay stuff (for example $15,000 public money to a private lawyer to fight gay marriage in RI). Plus as a gay I believe that gayness should be everywhere all the time, rammed down throats, rubbed in faces, massaged into vulvas*, etc.
But as someone who struggled to achieve a C in sex ed, I believe that the class should be shorter. Here's how not to get pregnant; here's how not to get herpes; here are the statutory rape laws.
The tie-breaker is that if teachers delivered a pro-gay message, that would hurt gay kids and no one else.
Someone in the article argues that schools teach values all the time. For example, capitalism is better than communism. I agree, but I also think that students should challenge values taught in school.
And kids would challenge the pro-gay message, if only because it'd be delivered cheesily. The teacher would have two options: squelch the opposition with force or with reason. Force would obviously be awkward for gay kids, especially when the anti-gay kid gleefully sued the school. If the teacher used reason then-- oh God! You trust teachers to wield reason? How do you think I turned into a communist?
* Most sources say the correct word is "vulvae" but they're wrong. Vulva has been an English word since 1548 so we should pluralize it in English.
PS: Writing all that out made me change my mind. Let gayness fight in the marketplace of ideas. Some freaks will stake out the anti-gay stance but others will say pro-gay things. Considering the paranoia that accompanies being a gay kid, any support could be a pleasant surprise.
