even descriptive morality is no fun

Steven Pinker says people are wired to judge actions against five standards of morality. These are harm, community, authority, fairness, and purity. Honesty must be a secondary virtue at best, trivial whenever one of the big five comes into play. If I want people to perceive me as moral, I should lie when:
  1. The truth would hurt someone.
  2. The truth is that the Democratic Party, New York University School of Law, or lesbians are not that great.
  3. The truth contradicts custom, the 9/11 Commission Report, or Jon Stewart.
  4. The truth undermines an institution which has supported me, e.g. interview-less admission policies, ladies' night, Newport Creamery.
  5. The truth is gross.
