One problem with Gennifer Flowers, wrote Historian to the Stars Arthur Schlesinger Jr in his diary, was that she was "such an obvious floozy." He then quoted Brooke Astor saying: "Why couldn't Mr. Clinton have stayed with girls of his own class?"
How confusing. Wasn't Clinton's own mother a floozy?
Yes. And in most societies that would put Clinton in a class with floozies. But heritage doesn't determine class in America, particularly the Northeastern part. That's because this place is full of overinfluential Jrs. who like to think that heritage didn't determine their classiness. What did? Just like Bill Clinton it was intellect, hard work, character--okay, basically name-brand education.
Our class system is different from but morally equivalent to that of 18th century France and Delta Delta Delta. It serves lucky people and those same people perpetuate it; it twists the knives inside unlucky people. Everyone in the middle is there to give the classy people something to be classier than. When we value all that American Dream meritocracy crap, either by devoting our lives to work or by scorning uneducated people, we're playing into Brooke Astor's descendants' hands.
