I'll write more in this once classes start in a week and a half and I have lots to complain about. Work's been over for a few weeks. In its place I've been moving into my new apartment and catching up with friends over drinks, one by one. Moving is too boring to write about, and my friends are too interesting...

EIW is this week. That's when the new 2L's interview with firms in order to get a job next summer that will pay them $30,000. The alternative to doing EIW-- which involves signing up and brushing your teeth-- is going for a "public interest" job that barely covers summer rent.

While I'm okay with brushing my teeth, I couldn't bring myself to do the signing up part. It's not that I'm so committed to the idea of "helping people." My hunch is that "helping people" is more fun than helping rich people, but who knows? It's just that law firms sound gross. Going out to $60 lunches sounds gross. Midtown is gross. "Mandatory social events" are gross.

A friend of mine who is doing EIW termed it "the path of least resistance." That's the ironic, self-effacing consensus on it. For most people who don't sign up, it's a source of pride. It should be for them-- they're going after something they want more than $30,000. Blowing off EIW is a sign of commitment to pursuing meaningful work. But me... what the hell am I doing?! If I'm so committed to using law to help people, shouldn't I have done the crim reading at least once in the last two months of school?

For me, rejecting $30,000 isn't a decision based in wisdom or principle. I'm following my own path of least resistance-- walking away from something because it's foreign. Maybe I'll regret it every time I can't afford a hott pair of boots for the rest of my life.

The problem with you is that you don't have a girlfriend that has plans for that $30,000.
